A few steps that limit the damage and help your claim.
Water leak or flood
- Shut off the main water valve if the leak comes from plumbing.
- Cut power to wet rooms only if the breaker panel is dry and safe to reach.
- Take photos before you move anything.
Mold
- Do not scrub it or spray bleach on it. That spreads spores.
- Turn off the A/C and any fan blowing across the area.
- Keep the room closed until it is inspected.
Fire and smoke
- Go back in only after the fire department says it is safe.
- Do not wipe soot off walls or fabrics. It smears and sets.
- Leave the A/C off until the system is checked.
Roof damage after a storm or hurricane
- Stay off the roof.
- Put buckets under leaks and move belongings out of the way.
- Take photos inside, following the water down: ceiling, walls and floor.
If anyone is in danger, call 911 first.
